Workshop on Ocean Accounts and Governance of Blue Carbon Ecosystems
View Details
Follow up to Fiji’s October 2025 national workshop, to strengthen the national data system and further develop Fiji’s National Plastics Data Inventory.
The workshop will be convened by the Government of Fiji through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) in collaboration with the UNSW Centre for Sustainable Development Reform (CSDR), the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) and the Pew Charitable Trusts (PCT).
This workshop is supported by the UK Blue Planet Fund DEFRA. Participants span senior government officials , senior academics, development partners, private sector, faith-based organisations, community representatives, non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations.
In October 2025, a national workshop was convened to initiate a process to strengthen Fiji’s national data system. MECC, in partnership with UNSW CSDR, GOAP and Pew, brought together government and external stakeholders to align on key priorities, evaluate existing data, identify critical gaps, and set out a vision for Fiji’s national data systems across ocean and plastics/waste management.
This follow-up workshop will present findings from the development of Fiji’s baseline data inventory on plastics, drawing on data gathered through collaboration with stakeholders involved in plastics and waste management initiatives.
A central element will examine how Fiji’s key ministries, agencies, and broader stakeholder groups can establish coordinated data-sharing mechanisms to support the ongoing maintenance and evolution of the baseline toward a comprehensive National Plastics Inventory. The workshop will then shift focus to the strategic application of this data for policy integration and implementation. Using the Pew Pathways tool, attendees will workshop how to translate technical data into actionable policy recommendations designed to deepen and accelerate the implementation of priority plastic and waste management policies across Fiji.

The opening remarks:
Collaboration across institutions will be essential as Fiji continues to strengthen its response to plastic pollution and environmental management.
Many organisations across Fiji collect valuable information through research, monitoring programmes, operational work, and community initiatives.
Yet this information often remains distributed across different agencies and projects.
By bringing these datasets together, we can build a stronger national evidence base that supports decision-making across government.
